JJ Wienkers-Alvendia is a writer, producer, agitator & activist repping the G in LGBTQ+. Forever drawing on his experiences growing up as “that gay kid” in small town Wisconsin, (pop. 10,000), JJ finds inspiration in all definitions of otherness. Funny drama unafraid of darkness is his sweet spot, telling queer, intersectional, character-driven stories; sometimes with a genre twist; often featuring a black lab modeled after his own dog son — recently colored further by spending a year living in Houston, Texas (in this climate?!) supporting his husband’s non-WFH career.
JJ is developing the limited series “DIRTY POP”, based on IP documenting the rise and fall of the BACKSTREET BOYS and NSYNC’s famed-to-infamous music producer, Lou Pearlman, with Dorothy Kozak Snoke and producers Don Murphy ("TRANSFORMERS", "NATURAL BORN KILLERS"), Vinjer Productions and London-based distributor New Media Vision. He co-created the original one-hour soapy drama “COMPLEX” with BAFTA-winning and Emmy Award-nominated UK TV Writer Daran Little (“CORONATION STREET”, “EASTENDERS”) and Canadian co-pro mainstays Piller/Segan. And before that, JJ co-wrote 3 of 8 episodes on “MARGEAUX”, an international drama about the Munich Olympic massacre by Adi Hasak, creator of “SHADES OF BLUE” (NBC) & “EYEWITNESS” (USA). JJ & Hasak also co-created & sold the upcoming international drama “PERFECT PEOPLE” to Leonine Studios, in production with Scandinavian streamer Viaplay.
All in, JJ wrote & developed six one-hour drama pilots + series bibles with Hasak for network, cable and streaming platforms. By effectively simulating a fully staffed writers’ room with just two people, JJ operated simultaneously as high-level writer, writers’ assistant, script coordinator & producer.
He continues to bring all these skills together, independently, elevating the queer & intersectional film & TV+ renaissance sweeping screens of all sizes — in his work, and in his second term leading the WGAW LGBTQ+ Inclusion & Equity Committee, now as Co-Chair.
JJ is repped by manager Cam Cubbison at Zero Gravity and attorney Ryan Goodell at Morris Yorn.
